Professional History

Cara Kimberg, PhD, has been at Kennedy Day School (KDS) since November 2017 where her primary responsibility is to conduct psychoeducational/neurodevelopmental assessments for students ages 3-22, with significant medical, developmental, and behavioral needs, as well as coordinate the social-emotional and behavioral supports for students. Dr. Kimberg also co-leads developmental play and mentor groups, and works individually with students on emotional regulation.

Dr. Kimberg received her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from Duke University and her PhD in Psychology from the University of Florida’s Clinical and Health Psychology Program, where her areas of focus included neurodevelopmental disorders and acquired brain injuries. Dr. Kimberg completed her clinical internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she provided treatment to children and adolescents admitted for inpatient rehabilitation services as part of a multidisciplinary team.

During her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami, Dr. Kimberg focused on worked on increasing treatment adherence in adolescents diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. She then worked as a clinical research psychologist in the Department of Epidemiology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, evaluating cognitive and emotional health in long-term survivors of childhood cancer. Dr. Kimberg moved to the Boston area in 2015 and worked as a primary care psychologist prior to joining KDS.

I use a strengths-based approach to promote skill acquisition across cognitive, behavioral, and social domains. I recognize that standardized assessment tools may not capture discrete strengths and weaknesses and therefore modifies my evaluation approach to ensure that students can access testing materials. I focus on how a student learns in order to develop targeted recommendations. I recognize the importance of collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to support student growth.
